I’m a paediatrician, a writer and a conceptual artist interested in integrating words and images in new ways to achieve a layering of meaning, and in combining the creative with a critical approach that achieves an interdisciplinary fusion of technique and subject.

Subject

As a raw vegan, a lesbian mother of twins, and the second generation immigrant daughter of a mother born and raised in South Africa, my work is autobiographical and auto-ethnographic, and focuses on narratives of otherness and exclusion, particularly as they pertain to the processes of knowledge production within society: how knowledge is intimately related to philosophical questions about truth, and sociological questions about power. I'm interested in food, gender, sexuality, childhood, colonialism and post-colonialism, and health.

Technique

I work within traditional creative writing genres, and am also particularly drawn to photography and graphic design within the visual arts. At present I’m experimenting with the fusion of these modalities to develop a unique visual poetic that draws on Wittgenstein’s picture theory to consider how both words and images encode propositions, and how their juxtaposition can enhance rather than detract from both.
